Small in numbers or not, it appears Newfoundland and Labrador has some pretty keen athletes who can hold their own on the biathlon range.
Several of the top biathletes in the province hail from the west coast and they proved over the weekend that they can hold their own with the most seasoned in Atlantic Canada.
They got a better handle on how they rank after participating in the 2018 Eastern Canadian Biathlon Championships at the Brookvale Provincial Park in North Wiltshire, P.E.I., over the weekend.

Stephenville’s Claire St. Croix won top spot in both of her races in the Youth Women division, edging out Corner Brook’s Katie Thistle in both events.
St. Croix posted a final time of 28:38.3 to place first in the 6-km sprint event held on Sunday, while Thistle nabbed second spot with a final clocking of 28:38.3.
On Saturday, St. Croix placed first in the 10-km individual with a time of 56:54.2 and Thistle followed with a time of 1:02:51.5.
Zachary Strickland of Corner Brook had a fine performance in the Youth Men division with a second-place finish in Sunday’s 7.5-km sprint and a first-place finish in Saturday’s 12.5-km individual.
Lucas Hann of Corner Brook, also competing in the Youth Men division despite battling illness, placed fifth in both events.
