Following a dominating season, the Dennis GM Western Kings have hit a little adversity.
Games 1 and 2 of the provincial major midget hockey league final took place at the Kinsmen Arena II over the weekend, with the Kings earning a double-overtime win over the St. John’s Maple Leafs on Saturday night, before falling to the Leafs on Sunday morning.
On Sunday, Nick French struck twice for the Leafs in a 3-1 win.
Paul Norman provided the other goal in the victory.
Lucas Robinson lit the lamp in the losing cause.
Andrew Curtis earned the win over Lucas Park, who suffered his first loss of the season after reeling off 20 straight wins.
The Leafs actually outshot the Kings 38-25, which has been a rare occurrence in this campaign.
Saturday night, Adrian Ward found the back of the net 3:04 into double overtime to let the Kings escape Game 1 win the win.
Andrew Antle (2), Robinson and Skyler Coates also scored in the triumph.
Nick Gosse (2), Lucas Osmond and Brandon Knight answered for the Leafs.
The Kings had built a 4-1 lead with 6:57 left in the second period, before the Leafs charged back, scoring late in the second, then again with 14:37 left in the third period to pull within one. Then with 41 seconds remaining and the goalie pulled, they evened it up.
Park was the winning goaltender, with Michael Fisher taking the loss. The Leafs edged the Kings in shots in this one as well, 45-39.
Game 3, 4, and 5 will be played in Mount Pearl next weekend. Games 6 and 7, if necessary, will be played in Corner Brook.
