Former provincial auditor general Terry Paddon is on a team looking to determine whether the City of St. John’s needs an auditor of its own.

Paddon, along with chartered accountant Lynn Zurel and former city council candidate Simon Lono, will be holding a public forum on Thursday, June 28 at city hall to let the public have their say on whether or not a municipal auditor general is needed.

The idea for a municipal auditor general was largely brought up during the 2017 municipal elections, with now Mayor Danny Breen adopting the policy as a part of his platform.

The committee is exploring a plethora of options for increasing the audit function at city hall. The public forum will ask if residents are happy with the status quo, whether a mandated internal audit should be made part of city bylaws, and whether there should be more audit staff in the existing office, to name a few options.

All those options are in addition to following the provincial model of auditor general, in a way that fits the city.

The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. in the Foran Green Room at St. John’s City Hall, with parking available in the city hall parking garage.
