Faced with the stress of being out of work, Kathy Langdon decided to stick with what she knew best to earn a living.

Kathy and Jerry Langdon opened up their new business — Western Furniture and Appliances at 85 North Main Street — in Deer Lake last month.

Kathy Langdon worked at the Sears outlet in Deer Lake for 15 years, eventually purchasing the building and retail outlet in 2015 from Roland Dawe who had decided to retire.

On Nov. 29, 2017, Sears Canada closed its retail outlets across the country and Langdon was left without a job.

“I didn’t know what to be doing but I said I got to do something because I have the building here and bills got to be paid,” Kathy said of her decision to stay in the retail business.

She had a lot of red tape to go through to set up her own business and she had to do her homework to find the right connections to provide her customers with a quality product and a great shopping experience.

She opened the doors to her new business on March 26 so it was certainly worth the time invested to get things up and running.

“I like dealing with the public and keeping everybody happy,” she said. “If we haven’t got a product that they’re looking for I’ll try to get it in to the store for them.”

She’s hoping to make the most out of her investment. She is hoping to build her clientele through providing a great shopping experience, and she thinks some young couple may want to take over the business down the road when she retires.

“Everybody tells me I look after my customers and I make them happy,” she said.
