HOLYROOD, N.L. — A multinational corporation heavily involved in serving the oil and gas industry is planning to establish a presence in Holyrood.
Council members unanimously approved a motion at the Tuesday, July 26 meeting to allow Halliburton to set up a site on Liam Hickey Drive (formerly Holyrood Access Road) to store and assemble perforation tools and equipment for oil and gas wells. That approval is in principle, subject to compliance with the town’s development regulations. The location is already zoned industrial general.
“This is a very exciting application we’ve got here before us tonight,” said Coun. Kevin Costello, chair of the town’s planning and development committee, noting this site will serve the offshore industry in Eastern Canada.
“It’s going to be a great addition to the area up there, and hopefully it’s the beginning of a lot of new growth for that area — targeting an industry we all hope is going to help grow the Town of Holyrood,” he said.
Mayor Gary Goobie seconded his colleague’s sentiments, pointing out this news falls in line with the municipality’s strategic plan to attract businesses to Holyrood. He noted there’s been a lot of activity locally and on that road in particular, which has a new Tim Hortons and North Atlantic Petroleum gas station and Orange Store.
At the same meeting, council also acknowledged the town’s recent award from the Economic Developers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador for its work on the Blue Ocean Innovation Valley project. That project involves 50 acres of land earmarked for an industrial park. It’s positioned to serve the economic interests of the marine sector.
