More money from the Atlantic Fisheries fund will see $8 million going to 59 fisheries projects across the province.
Federal Fisheries Minister Johnathan Wilkinson was in St. John’s on Tuesday for the announcement, joined by Premier Dwight Ball, Fisheries and Land Resources Minister Gerry Byrne, and MPs Ken McDonald, Nick Whalen, and Yvonne Jones.
“This new funding will help create more jobs in coastal and Indigenous communities across Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Wilkinson, in a release.
The Fogo Island Co-operative Society will get the largest slice of the funding, with $1.6 million going towards a $2.2 million project to upgrade fileting machines and a spiral freezer.
The North of Fifty Thirty in River of Ponds will see $1.3 million go towards a $1.6 million project for handling and harvesting technologies on the Northern Peninsula.
The Fish, food, and Allied Workers Union (FFAW) will also receive $270,334 from the fund to put towards a $408,067 project for “cod quality improvement.”
The Atlantic Fisheries fund provides $400 million in funding from the federal and provincial governments over seven years, with this year being the second year for the program.
