The Town of Marystown has added to their Christmas display outside the town hall this year.
In addition to the usual traditional Christmas tree decorated with multi-coloured lights, a second tree is illuminated with green bulbs.
Coun. Loretta Lewis explained that over the past year efforts have increased on the Burin Peninsula to bring awareness to the issue of mental health.
As part of that, the Burin Peninsula Health Care Foundation developed a mental health and addictions campaign in which business and organizations were encouraged to display green lights over the holiday season.
“Green is the colour for mental health,” explained Lewis. “This year we decided (in addition to) our regular pretty colour lit up tree, we’d go with a green tree for mental health.”
Lewis said the town hopes to add to the display in coming years.
“Mental health is every day, it’s just not during Christmas,” she said. “We want to bring awareness to that, but especially during the holidays.
“It’s a very difficult, challenging time for some individuals.”
