LABRADOR CITY, N.L.
NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
While a lot of people were out of town for the Labour Day long weekend, or getting their cabin ready for winter, many people still came out for Labour Day celebrations.
The Labrador West District Labour Council helped host an afternoon of activities to remind those in attendance of the importance of the labour unions role.
Labrador City and Wabush has a large number of unionized workers dating back to the early days of mines in the area.
The Steelworkers Union in Labrador have also played a big part in health and safety legislation that have been put in place in the province, including the right to refuse work in unsafe conditions and new regulations concerning the silica code of standard.
Earlier this year, people in Labrador West saw the union solidarity as workers at the Iron Ore Company of Canada were on strike for nine weeks.
Mostly though, it was a day of fun for family and friends. Which was made even better by good weather, not always guaranteed in September in Labrador West.
