Maggie Jane Marlena Spearing was the first baby born in 2019 at the Labrador West Health Centre in Labrador City.

Born to Amy Cadwell and Martin Spearing, the 9lb 15oz baby arrived at 10:18 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2019 and is a younger sister for Miley.

The proud parents and their newborn received an infant car seat donated by the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association’s (NLMA) Infant Car Seat Program. Through the NLMA, the first baby born in the New Year at the nine hospitals that perform routine deliveries in Newfoundland and Labrador receives a car seat.

Physicians in the province have provided over 350 car seats for newborns at hospitals since the inception of the program over 30 years ago. The program encourages parents to use approved car seats for their children from the moment they leave the hospital as newborns.

A second presentation was held for the family by the Labrador West Health Centre Auxiliary who present a silver cup, T-shirt and knitted cap to the first baby born at the Labrador City hospital.
