PORT AUX BASQUES, NL – Port aux Basques has become the first official autism-friendly town in Canada.
Mayor Todd Strickland signed the declaration on Wednesday in front of Autism Involves Me (AIM) members, town councillors and other guests.
AIM co-founder Joan Chaisson had written a letter to council requesting the town show its support for autism, a proposition unanimously supported by the councillors.
“No doubt AIM has been on the go for three years, four years, and there have been some great things done by your group and by the autism community in Port aux Basques, and I am very proud to say we are world leaders in being autism friendly,” said Strickland.
Recently AIM also celebrated the grand opening of the first autistic-friendly hotel in Canada, the Hotel Port aux Basques.
