In this live story, we’ll be tracking the campaign news as it happens

1:45 p.m. — Singh apologizes for ‘respect’ comment and rips Scheer for GST remarks

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh apologized for joking yesterday at a campaign stop that he doesn’t respect Conservatives.

“I said something yesterday that I feel really bad about,” said Singh, before he took questions from reporters in Port Alberni, British Columbia. “We’ve got to respect everybody. People should be respected no matter what their political views are.”

Singh also took the opportunity to respond to Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s claim this morning that the Liberals and NDP want to raise the GST.

“Mr. Scheer is just making stuff up because he’s getting desperate,” said Singh.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau also weighed in on Sheer’s comments, saying “it’s unfortunate that the Conservatives have to make up attacks on us.”

12:00 p.m. — Trudeau questioned on the rise of the Bloc

At a campaign stop in Whitby, ON, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau was pushed to explain how the rise of the NDP and the Bloc Québécois happened under his watch.

Trudeau has said in the past that the Liberals don’t need a Quebec lieutenant because he is the “general” in that province, but the election campaign has seen the Bloc surging and likely to pick up seats when voters go to the polls on Monday.

Trudeau said he’s happy to see Canadians considering their options, but he still believes the Liberals are the best option for progressive voters.

“Canadians, I’m confident will make the right choice,” said Trudeau.

11:00 a.m. — Scheer says carbon tax repeal is ‘clear commitment’ despite vows from other parties

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer won’t say if he considers his high-priority legislation to repeal the federal carbon tax a confidence vote in a potential minority parliament.

“These types of discussions are all centred around what happens after Oct. 21,” said Scheer. Instead, the Conservative leader said he prefers to ask Canadians for a strong mandate to remove the carbon tax.

With all the other federal parties vowing to reject the tax’s repeal, Scheer was asked if he can guarantee to his supporters that it will be gone by next year.

“I have made a clear commitment to Canadians,” said Scheer.

9:30 a.m. — Leaders gear up for the final sprint

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer will be in Fredericton, St-Georges and Drummondville today. He’ll take questions from the media at 10:30 a.m. in Fredericton.
