ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador has long celebrated the province’s intrinsic connection with craft, and will showcase it again this week with the opening of two new exhibits in its St. John’s gallery.
The craft council’s annual members’ exhibition - one of its most anticipated events every year - will showcase the talents and hard work of local artists in textiles, ceramics, jewelry, woodworking and other media.
Its launch will also include the presentation of the 2019 Award for Excellence in Fine Craft.
“Bittersweet: A Reminiscence of Newfoundland and Labrador in Pottery” is described by the gallery as an exploration of bittersweet feelings, memories and experiences associated with this province, and features the work of 12 local ceramic artists: Anita Singh, Bradley Whitten, Christina Pitcher, Evelyn Roitner, Florence Donaway, James Stenson, Joanne Moores, Nicole Sullivan, Roxanne Pitcher, Toby Rabinowitz and Wendy Shirran.
The public opening receptions for both shows will happen Saturday from 2-4 p.m. at the craft council gallery, 275 Duckworth St.
“Bittersweet” will run until July 19, while the members’ exhibition will close Aug. 11.
