Let’s get one thing straight: It is very rare that People Magazine ‘s annual Sexiest Man Alive title is granted to a winner that makes sense. Apart from that one time Idris Elba — a man who could and should always win — scored the title last year.
There are only two things that must be taken into account when bestowing the title: 1) The individual must be sexy; and 2) He must have had the sexiest accomplishments of that year. “Sexy” may be subjective, but more often than not, People’s winners seem to be objectively off the mark. For example, winners are almost always awarded a a few years after their peak years, like David Beckham in 2015 or Adam Levine in 2013. And what about that time Blake Shelton happened?
All of which is to say, it seemed obvious that this year’s winner would be none other than Keanu Reeves, who has had a very big year with John Wick 3, Always Be My Maybe, Toy Story 3 and the upcoming Bill & Ted sequel. On top of that, there’s his perpetual status as internet boyfriend, and the news that he’s finally found love, with artist Alexandra Grant.
So it came as quite a surprise when John Legend was announced as the recipient of the honour (?) on Tuesday by People
To be fair, he iss the newest coach on The Voice , which seems to be a harbinger for People’s sexiest men, including Shelton and Levine. And yes, Legend has a very sexy voice, and with many sexy songs in his repertoire.
But if anything propelled him to Sexiest Man Alive status in 2019, it’s his wife, Chrissy Teigen, who has, arguably, become more of a personality than her husband — especially on social media. She just launched her new food website in correlation with her Cravings cookware line and, this month, she and Legend covered Vanity Fair alongside their two children.
One might say she brings the personality to their brand. Just take one glance at her Twitter last night, when she wrote, upon declaring the news. “I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!” Her bio now reads: “currently sleeping with people’s sexiest man alive.”
Maybe this is how Shelton scored his title that one off year, when he began a hot and heavy and very shocking romance with Gwen Stefani, who was making a little bit of a musical comeback at the time.
If this year’s win is once again more about the power of the woman behind the man, I guess I can allow it.
