One year ago, we were blessed with the romantic epic that was A Star is Born , starring the surprisingly chemistry-filled match between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
So hot was the tension between them that many assumed the pair had taken their onscreen love offscreen.
At the time of filming, Cooper was dating model Irina Shayk, with whom he shares a daughter, and Gaga was dating talent agent Christian Carino.
But that meant nothing to fans who took note of their tension-filled press tour in which she spoke repeatedly of there being “100 people in the room” and Cooper being the one to notice and pluck her into further notoriety. Or him repeatedly recalling the time she heated up leftover pasta for him, which meant a lot, because they’re both “East Coast Italian-Americans.”
Most notable, however, was their performance at the Oscars that year, where the two performed their hit “Shallow” while sitting at a piano and gazing longingly into each other’s eyes. It was A MOMENT, filled with lusty close-ups. Within weeks of the performance, both split from their respective partners, only adding more fuel to rumours of their romance.
But now, for this month’s issue of Elle , Gaga admits to Oprah Winfrey that there was never anything between them, and actually, they’re just very good actors.
“Quite frankly, I think the press is very silly,” Gaga said. “I mean, we made a love story. For me, as a performer and as an actress, of course we wanted people to believe that we were in love. And we wanted people to feel that love at the Oscars. We wanted it to go right through the lens of that camera and to every television that it was being watched on. And we worked hard on it, we worked for days. We mapped the whole thing out — it was orchestrated as a performance. … In truth, when we talked about it, we went, ‘Well, I guess we did a good job!'”
Winfrey said that, after recently speaking with Cooper, he, too, said the rumours weren’t true and that if they had been involved, “his Catholic guilt would have never let him be able to look (Gaga) in the eye at that piano.”
She also previously said on Jimmy Kimmel Live , “People saw love and, guess what, that’s what we wanted to you to see. This is a love song.”
Mission accomplished.
