There’s simply something about the old-school vibe of a diner. Flat-top patties, plates heaped with crispy battered fish and chips, and basic breakfast remain king for a reason. Simple unfussy food at reasonable prices will never go out of style.

1. Westcliff Restaurant

Entering Westcliff Restaurant feels like stepping into a time before smartphones, social media, and the internet. With vinyl banquettes, a 14-seat lunch counter, an old-school Pepsi-branded letter board sign, the Westcliff is a rare gem. When you arrive, write down your order and hand it to one of the owners behind the counter, who, together, along with the flat top burgers, will add to your unforgettable experience.

2. Pleasant Street Diner

Pleasant Street Diner gets all of the basics right. Fair prices, simple comfort food, cheery atmosphere, and friendly service make for a casual and cozy spot to visit for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There is always an attempt to make you feel special, and a sincere thank you when you leave. The rice pudding is one of my favourites in town! They do get very busy with lineups but the wait is generally quick and worth it. Keep in mind take-out is an option if you don’t feel like waiting for a table.

3. Johnny’s Snack Bar

A staple on Almon Street for over 30 years, Johnny’s Snack Bar has a legit old-school vibe. The dining room is filled with booths and a counter with vinyl-clad stools runs the length of the inside. The fish and chips are great, but it’s the hot turkey sandwich I love. Paired with a milkshake, it’s one of my favourite casual meals in the city. Keep in mind Johnny’s is cash-only.

4. Hellas Family Restaurant

A friend first took me to Hellas Family Restaurant years ago. Hellas has a hardcore base of regular customers. Serving classic diner staples like fish and chips, sandwiches, and breakfast, the prices at Hellas are fair and the staff is always friendly. We love their breakfast and the club sandwich, and we also enjoy the feeling of coming home when we visit.

5. Cousins Restaurant

Cousins Restaurant is one of those places where you know what to expect the moment you walk in the door. A family owned and operated restaurant, Cousins serves home-style food without pretension and the service and the prices reflect that. Simple breakfast and lunch items, or one of their Greek dishes have always been a safe bet for us. Cousins is also family friendly which can be a bonus for many.
