Foodies flock to Elliston for Roots, Rants and Roars Festival

The Food Hike this past Saturday, Sept. 15, in Elliston was just one part of the annual Roots, Rants and Roars food festival, which features hundreds of foodies eagerly ready to sample the cooking of famous chefs—from Newfoundland and Labrador and abroad.

In addition to the Cod Wars event on Friday night, awarded to the best spin on a codfish dish—won by Roary MacPhearson of the Wilds—and the Feast, seven course meal later on Saturday evening, hundreds attended the Food Hike.

The hike saw five stations throughout the road to Maberly with food like grilled sweet corn and salt beef with potato gnocchi and mustard pickles.

At the station of Duff Goldman and Geoff Manthorne of the Food Network in the United States, hungry hikers help themselves to some grilled buttermilk biscuits as part of their offering.

For attendees Marlene Jesso and Paul Boland of Mount Pearl, they loved their first time at the annual food festival.

Jesso told The Packet she enjoyed the many different takes on cod dishes at the Cod Wars event.

“They all had different ways of cooking but they were all pretty good,” she said.

Boland says they decided to attend the event to be able to experience the festival for the first time. They even booked their bed and breakfast a year in advance in preparation.

“(We came) to experience the area, the food and the drinks!” he laughs.

They both agree it was an amazing, well-organized time at Roots, Rants and Roars this year.
