It just doesn’t get old for Gina Spencer.
The 16-year-old has had her name stamped on the Junior Rose Bowl trophy four times at previous Corner Brook Rotary Music Festivals.
On Tuesday night, the Level 1 Corner Brook Regional High School student got her name on her first Senior Rose Bowl trophy as the most impressive performer during the 56th annual festival.
“Every single year it’s so humbling to receive the Rose Bowl because everyone was especially amazing this year, more so than ever, I think,” she said of the field of fantastic musical talent on display during the last 11 days.
What’s different about her latest artistic achievement is that performing is becoming more about enjoying the moment.
“There’s a little bit of pressure to win, but I do it mostly just for fun now,” she said.
She was listed as a Rose Bowl finalist for piano, but throughout the festival Spencer performed in vocal, musical theatre, woodwind and saxophone categories.
Graduating into the senior category is not lost on Spencer as she looks at the many other people who have also won the award in the past. She knows several of them personally and has worked with some of them.
“Looking at some of the names on there, it’s such an honour to be there with them,” she said.
This year’s junior Rose Bowl winner was Will Brothers for voice. The 11-year-old also performed in piano and musical theatre categories during the festival.
