Four people charged in connection with a fire in Rocky Harbour over two and half years ago have elected to be tried in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador by a judge and jury.
Neither Brady Samson, 20, Krisandra Walters, 35, Thomas Walters, 32, or Olivia Walters, 38, was present in provincial court in Corner Brook when their matter was called on Tuesday morning.
The four are jointly charged on a single information that alleges they did intentionally cause damage to a cabin on Main Street North in Rocky Harbour on Jan. 24, 2016.
Court information lists Samson as being a resident of Eddies Cove West, Krisandra Walters lives in Rocky Harbour and Thomas Walters and Olivia Walters reside in Corner Brook.
The four were represented by three different lawyers during the appearance.
And while some intended to ask for additional time, Samson’s lawyer, Jim Bennett, said his client was ready to elect a mode of trial on the indictable offence.
Bennett appeared via court call and told Judge Catherine Allen-Westby that Samson elected trial by judge and jury in the Supreme Court with a preliminary inquiry.
Because the four are jointly charged that meant the same election would apply to all of them.
A preliminary inquiry in the case has been set for March 25, 26 and 27, 2019.
