LABRADOR CITY, N.L. — With only five votes separating the first and second place candidates in the Labrador West district during the provincial election last week a recount was mandatory. Today, May 22, the provinces Chief Electoral Officer Bruce Chaulk submitted an application to the courts for a judicial recount.

According to the official count, Jordan Brown of the NDP received 1,366 votes and Graham Letto, the Liberal incumbent, received 1,361 votes. As per the Elections Act an election that results in a difference of 10 votes or less must have a judicial recount.

According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, the total number of rejected ballots in the district was 26; eight of those 26 were rejected Special Ballots.

Elections NL will announce when the Supreme Court has set the date for the judicial recount.
