Coun. Laura Aylward says Transportation and Works’ overnight plowing service needs to be brought back on Route 460 and Route 490 leading into Stephenville.

She said at the regular general meeting of the Stephenville town council on Thursday she recently had some personal experiences on White’s Road (Route 460) and it wasn’t good, fearing getting stuck or in an accident.

“It’s terrible what we have to put up with on Route 460 (White’s Road/Hansen Highway) and Route 490 (Roxon Way),” which is the road leading into Stephenville from the Barachois Brook area.

Coun. Maurice Hynes said he has heard from a number of people who have had unpleasant experiences on those roads and found it a challenge getting to the Trans-Canada Highway. Their reason for travelling ranged from medical appointments, personal to business.

Aylward said there are many stories out there, but the bottom line is that the area is not getting the service it should, especially with a Department of Transportation and Works depot located in Stephenville.

She said on the east coast of the province there are lots of plows on the roads, but go west of Corner Brook and the service is terrible.
