Two men — one from Newfoundland and Labrador and one from Nova Scotia, are facing charges following what police describe as an attempted kidnapping.
Around 7 p.m. June 29, RCMP in Wood Buffalo, Alta., responded to a report of a fight in process at a residence in the Timberlea area.
Shortly thereafter, another call to police reported two adult males were observed putting another adult male into the trunk of a vehicle.
Two suspects were arrested that evening. The adult male victim was not located in the vehicle, however, was quickly located in Fort McMurray by police and taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police do not believe this was a random act.
The initial driver, Norman Rudy Andrews, 46, of Baie Verte, has been charged with eight offences: kidnapping, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, robbery, forcible confinement, assault causing bodily harm, breaking and entering, and uttering threats.
The second driver, Aaron Donald MacPhail, 38, of New Waterford, N.S., has been charged with 12 offences: kidnapping, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, robbery, forcible confinement, assault causing bodily harm, breaking and entering, uttering threats, failing to stop or remain at a collision, operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police, failure to comply with conditions, and theft under $5,000.00.
The two accused were remanded into custody after a judicial hearing and will appear in Fort McMurray Provincial Court on July 9.
