Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s volunteer firefighters were called out to their second fire of the day Wednesday when a barn caught fire in the town.

Firefighters had just returned to their station from an earlier house fire when they received a call about smoke and flames in the woods on Franklyn Place off Neary’s Pond Road.

High winds were blowing the smoke from the fire throughout that area of town. The firefighters located the fully engulfed barn in woods behind a home on the street. They had to lay several water lines to get to the blaze and spent about an hour trying to put out the fire in high winds.

The barn was completely destroyed and it was not known if there were any animals inside.

The volunteer firefighters were assisted by personnel from the St. John's Regional fire department.

The incident is under investigation.
