ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — “Don’t be afraid,” St. John’s Coun. Dave Lane said during the roundtable at Tuesday’s council meeting.

He was referring to continuing commentary about the city’s bike master plan — what the city’s website calls “a vision for the future of cycling in St. Johns” — that has drawn both concern and support from residents.

Lane used his time during the go-around to quell the concerns.

He said the plan is “something we can build upon – it’s not set in stone.”

“I know that it’s something that has really hit home with non-cycling users of our Grand Concourse trails because the three proposed catalyst projects are on three of the trails,” Lane said.

He called the plan “more of a framework or a guideline” that is “very long-term” and “very broad,” again reiterating that none of the plans in the bike master plan are “set in stone.”

He said the three paths that were identified as catalyst projects for the plan were identified because it could provide a connected network of routes, enabling more people to bike to destinations around the city.

“To say that this is set in stone or that the preliminary designs … are set in stone is false, and so really the better way to view these is as a starting point for discussion.”

Council approved the plan on June 10, but noted at that time there would be ongoing public engagement on any projects within the plan, or about any changes to the plan.
