SPCA official seized 35 dogs and puppies from what they're calling a puppy mill operation near Wolfville.
The SPCA said in a release that it seized the animals Tuesday morning after a lengthy investigation that started in September.
All the animals were removed after the SPCA and RCMP raided the undisclosed site shortly before 10 a.m.
The release said all animals were taken to SPCA facilities for medical treatment and shelter.
“We are triaging the animals to assess their health, and determine which individuals require urgent care,” provincial SPCA inspector Jo-Anne Landsburg said in the release. “Given the number of animals involved this is an extremely complex operation.”
The investigation began after someone reported animal mistreatment after visiting the site. The SPCA issued compliance orders for what it called several “significant problems regarding the psychological and physical state of the animals and their unsanitary living conditions.”
It said some of the dogs were being kept in a home on the site.
Charges are pending.
