SYDNEY, N.S. — The potential of a strike at Cape Breton University appears to have been averted as both the university and union leaders are recommending a new three–year deal.
The university and the Cape Breton University Faculty Association announced Friday they reached a tentative deal after two days of talks with a provincial labour department conciliator.
The tentative deal must now receive support from the union’s membership and the university board of governors. Both negotiating teams are recommending ratification. The union represents faculty, librarians, lab instructors and nursing practice educators.
“We are looking forward to working together with CBUFA to create the best possible experience for faculty, staff and students of Cape Breton University,” said university president David Dingwall.
“Collective bargaining can be difficult and stressful. The association is committed to working jointly on improving its relationship with the employer,” said Calvin Howley, faculty union president.
The school has a current enrolment of about 5,500 students.
