MARYSTOWN, N.L. — With interest growing in the marine industrial park in Marystown, RJG Construction Ltd. has been award the contract to prepare the sites for development.
The St. John’s-based company was the lowest of three firms bidding on the project, with $1,566,419.60. Goobie Rentals and Constructing submitted a bid of $1,589,450.65; and Pennecon Ltd. came in at $1,890,470.
Coun. Loretta Lewis put forward the motion that the town should accept the lowest bid during a regular meeting of council Tuesday, April 16.
The contract was awarded under the town’s earth works and blasting project for the marine industrial park.
Mayor Sam Synard explained that pervious tenders for the project were in excess of $3 million, but further inspection of the site allowed them to stay within the budget amount.
“About a month ago we had a call to tender for heavy civil work for the marine industrial park to make the lots build-ready – level them off… we were going to do a lot of blasting,” explained Synard. “The contract came in well over budget; we had $1.5 million ballpark allocated and the projects came in at $3.6 million, the lowest tender.”
He added the Town had to find a different approach and rented a large excavator.
“We did a fair bit of exploratory digging through rock, and we identified what rock was there versus what rock we thought was there, so we were able to bring that piece of work down from a bid of $3.6 million to a bid of $1.5 million.”
The Town of Marystown has also approved the sale of lot #8 to Mallay’s Industrial Services Ltd at a cost of $150,126.
A number of conditions are attached to the sale.
