In an attempt to bolster more support for their argument, two Deer Lake residents have started an online petition against the location of a crematorium in town.
Last week, the town council of Deer Lake approved an application from Parsons Funeral Home to add a cremation facility at its operation on Main Street.
As reported by The Western Star, Kayla Critch and Steve Brent, who live near the funeral parlour, have since filed an appeal of council’s decision with the Western Regional Appeal Board.

They say not enough is known about the emissions from crematoriums to allow one in an area so close to homes, a school and other businesses.
Now, they have also created the online petition, seeking support from anyone else who agrees with them that the crematorium should be located in a more industrial area.
The petition includes an image of smoke emanating from the crematorium in a residential area of Stephenville, which drew some media attention earlier this year. The owner of that funeral home said the smoke was not from human remains, but came from cardboard that prematurely burns before the cremation unit reaches the correct temperature for incineration.
Not long after Stephenville said it had no problem with the crematorium in its town, the City of Corner Brook rejected an application from Country Haven Funeral Home to build on a cremation facility at its location on Country Road.
As of deadline Wednesday, the petition against the Deer Lake crematorium had garnered 218 signatures.
