A whale carcass off the western coast of Newfoundland captured on video by a drone recently has been identified as a female blue whale.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans said it has identified the species based on photographs and drone footage of the dead animal

The dead whale, which is a species at risk, is located in the icepack near Fischells in St. George’s Bay.

Western Newfoundland is experiencing some of the worst sea ice in years this spring.

Due to the dynamic and shifting pack ice surrounding the animal, DFO has not yet been able to collect direct measurements of or tissue samples from the whale.
