GANDER, NL – The tourism information centre in Gander is getting a new deck for musical and theatrical performances.

Federal and provincial funding for the deck, which will overlook Gander Lake, was announced yesterday, May 22.

The province is contributing $24,247 to the Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce for the project, while the federal government is making a non-repayable investment of $70,755, according to a news release from the provincial Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation.

The deck, an addition to the existing centre, will be roofed, open-air, two-tiered and fully accessible, and will link by trail to nearby tourism assets, including walks along Gander Lake, a walk to the Silent Witness Memorial and a connection to the programs and activities at the North Atlantic Aviation Museum.

Regional and provincial talent will be featured on the deck during the summer season.

Kirk White of the Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce said the centre had a strong year in 2017 with a 20 per cent increase in visitors.

“The addition of a viewing and gathering space will be a nice addition to accommodate this growing number of visitors to the information centre while providing an opportunity to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of our pristine Gander Lake and local entertainment, while planning their excursion throughout our beautiful area,” White said.
