DEER LAKE
A Deer Lake man has been charged with public mischief after allegedly reporting his vehicle had been stolen when it wasn’t.
On Oct. 18, the 28-year-old man contacted the Deer Lake Royal Canadian Mounted Police Detachment to report the vehicle, a red pickup truck, had been stolen from a parking lot in the town sometime overnight.
He told police the truck had since been located on George Aaron Drive after being involved in an accident where the thief left the scene.
An examination of the scene revealed that the driver had lost control of the truck, left the road and crashed into a tree.
The investigation further determined the vehicle had not been stolen. The owner was arrested and charged with public mischief.
He was later released from custody and will appear in provincial court in Corner Brook at a later date.
