Turntables have been making a comeback in recent years, but the one at the port of Corner Brook doesn’t spin vinyl records.
The infrastructure on the city’s dock was built two years ago to accommodate extra cable being used as part of the Muskrat Falls project on the Lower Churchill River.
The spare subsea cable will be on hand if needed for use under the Strait of Belle Isle.
Work is now ongoing by Nexans, the company doing the subsea cable work on behalf of Nalcor Energy, to build a temporary structure to close in the turntable.
According to Nalcor, the temporary structure will permit the company to heat the space to the handling temperature that's required to off-load the additional spare cable from the vessel and spool it on to the turntable that's already in place for storage.
Once the additional spare cable has been spooled onto the turntable, the temporary structure will be removed.
Nexans has subcontracted some of the work to Brook Construction, a contractor based out of Corner Brook.
There are currently eight workers on site, including six with Brook Construction, one with the Lower Churchill Project and one from Nexans. When the vessel arrives in Corner Brook around mid-March, Nexans will have an additional four or five people on site.
