Emma Burry, a graduate of the visual fine arts program at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University in Corner Brook is among this year’s winners in the BMO 1st Art! competition.

Burry was recently named one of the competitions 12 regional winners

She won as Newfoundland and Labrador’s representative with her installation titled “Longing Expanse.”

The piece consisted of two panels connected by a woven strand of blue yarn. The inspiration came from her home province and represents the solitude and comfort that comes with being surrounded by sky and sea.
As the regional winner, Burry won $7,500 and her work, along with all the other winning submissions will also be showcased at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto from Nov. 15 to Dec. 8.

Another artist from Corner Brook and a Grenfell Campus visual arts graduate, Lauren Brinson, was a regional winner at the BMO 1st Art! competition last year.
