HALIFAX, NS — Four SaltWire Network publications from Newfoundland and Labrador are being honoured as standing finalists for the 2018 Newspapers Atlantic Better Newspapers Competition.
The Beacon (Gander), The Compass (Carbonear), The Packet (Clarenville) and The Southern Gazette (Marystown) are among the publications from the four Atlantic provinces being recognized for journalistic excellence.
The Compass is a finalist in three categories. It’s one of three finalists in the general excellence category (Class 1), recognizing a paper’s ability to deliver and present quality work on all fronts. Compass reporter Chris Lewis is a finalist in the photo essay category for his coverage of the annual Harvest Run in Carbonear, and Compass freelance writer Pat Cullen is a finalist for outstanding local columnist.
The Beacon is also a best photo essay finalist for pictures of Change Islands submitted by the Gander Photography Club. Packet reporter Jonathan Parsons is an outstanding resource story finalist for his conversation with a former fish plant worker and union rep that coincided with the cod moratorium’s 25th anniversary. Southern Gazette reporter Colin Farrell is recognized in the outstanding feature story category for an article about a Fortune woman advocating for improved addiction treatment services on the Burin Peninsula.
Winners will be announced at an awards show in Halifax June 1.
