Jasen Benwah said he plans on being even more active this term on the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Council.

The Cape St. George man, who was returned to the band council in Tuesday’s Qalipu election after serving a single term, said he will be looking for Qalipu to do more work in terms of community development, with personnel to help provide more opportunities.

He said those could include education, training, workshops for culture and even business development.

He said there’s lots of this stuff being done now but it needs to spread out to all the wards, including Port au Port, which is now the second largest when it comes to the numbers.

Benwah has been active as chief of the Benoit First Nation headquartered in Cape St. George, where there are a lot of cultural activities, which needs to be done in the rest of the Port au Port ward.

“I’m looking forward to a strong band council, staying the course and getting things done,” he said.
