CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Kirk Keeping, already charged with the first-degree murder of Chantel John of Conne River in January, is now facing a separate charge of attempted murder.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police major crime unit in Corner Brook laid the new charge on Feb. 26. Keeping also faces charges for breaching probation and undertaking.
The RCMP does not name the victim related to the attempted murder charge.
Keeping remains in police custody and will make his next court appearance on May 1.
John was 28 when she was killed in Conne River on Jan. 9.
The Miawpukek Mi'kamawey Mawi'omi First Nation said her death illustrates the ongoing national crisis of murdered and missing Indigenous women. The community rallied around the family, as have communities across the province and the country.
