The new Canada’s Food Guide released this week has some dramatic changes from the previous guide, with more emphasis on healthier food choices and habits and encouragement to drink more water. While the idea is to eat smarter and healthier, not all grocery budgets can afford what a truly healthy diet consists of. In Newfoundland and Labrador, consistent access to fresh food can also be an issue.

Question: Is it a challenge for you to eat healthy?

Devon Bates

- York Harbour

Not really. I know where most of my food is coming from. For some, the cost and availability could be a challenge and it could definitely be easier than it is now, but it’s not for me.

Keith Crotty

- Corner Brook

No, I don’t think so. I live right here in town, so it seems good food is widely available. Sometimes, the cost can be a challenge, but I think the availability is pretty good.

Blanche Osmond

- Woody Point

I don’t eat out very often and cook at home. I eat a lot of salads, so the problems we’ve had with lettuce is a concern. Everything is expensive and it’s hard to get things where I live.

Karen Kennedy

- Humber Valley Resort

I attempt to eat healthy, but it’s hard because of prices and we don’t have fresh produce here all the time. We’re in Newfoundland, so I expect the cost to be higher compared to other provinces.

Trudy Best

- Cox’s Cove

No. We eat healthy and I try to follow the new guide a little bit, but it’s not going to be too much of challenge. Food is still the same price. It is what it is and I’m not doing without the food I want. If it’s healthy, it’s healthy.

Maisie Baldwin

- Belleville, Ont.

It sure is a challenge because of the cost and availability. It’s too expensive, especially here in Newfoundland where there’s not a lot of variety of where to shop. You buy lettuce Sunday and it’s rotten Tuesday.
