A man who barricaded himself inside a Stephenville Crossing home on Wednesday afternoon has been released on an undertaking.
Members of the Bay St. George RCMP are continuing their investigation into the incident that occurred on Wednesday on Downey’s Lane in Stephenville Crossing.
Police said it was about 3:30 p.m. that Bay St. George RCMP and Police Dog Services West responded to a report of a 23-year-old man armed with a weapon, which in this instance was a knife, according to Cpl. Brad Lucas.
The man had barricaded himself at the residence and, after a 40-minute stand-off, he surrendered his weapon and was taken into custody. He was transported to the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital for assessment.
During the stand-off there was a large police presence, including officers holding assault rifles, along with an ambulance standing by.
Lucas said police weren’t threatened during the incident and there were no safety concerns for the public while it was taking place.
The man was taken to the ground by a group of police officers outside the residence and once secured was taken to a nearby police vehicle and transported to hospital. The incident drew a lot of attention from people in the community who were wondering what was going on.
The man was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in Stephenville Provincial Court on Oct. 1.
