Cancer Society’s Bark for Life fundraiser to take place in Massey Drive on Sunday

The Canadian Cancer Society in Corner Brook recognizes how important a dog can be to someone who is battling cancer.

“When someone is really sick, some of their best companionship and support comes from their canine companion,” said Brittany House, special events co-ordinator and summer student with the society.

To pay tribute to those four-legged friends and raise money for Daffodil Place in St. John’s the local office is holding a Bark for Life fundraiser at Tippings Pond in Massey Drive on Sunday. Funds will be raised through an event registration fee.

The event, which House said is “just a good family event” will run from 4-8 p.m.

It will start with a walk around Tippings Pond for participants that will include a scavenger hunt for children.

Back at the starting point there will be some booths set up for local businesses, face painting, visits from some character mascots, music and the St. John Ambulance will be on site. The NL West SPCA will also be hosting a barbecue.

There will also be a Strut Your Mutt contest to give dog owners a chance to show off their pets. The contest winner will get a portrait of their pet painted by Janice Cooper-Hardy.

Forty dogs and more than double that in people took part in last year’s event and House is hoping the new venue and changing the time, to the evening when it’s a bit cooler, will see even more participate this year.

And she said you don’t need a dog to participate.

“Anything on a leash can walk. If you’ve got a cat that’s pretty gnarly that can walk on a leash show it off.”
