ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — St. John’s Coun. Dave Lane used his time in the go-round at the Monday evening council meeting to encourage people to go downtown.
The second phase of the five-year Water Street infrastructure project to replace 100-year-old water and sewer pipes is ongoing and is expected to clew up by the end of June. Meanwhile, it has resulted in a temporary traffic detour on Water Street.
Lane said the construction is having an impact on businesses in the area despite mitigation efforts, such as displaying colourful signs to let pedestrians and motorists know the area is still open for business.
“I really encourage folks to get down, they need our support,” said Lane.
He said while some people might avoid construction areas, going through the area is “pretty cool” and “great for kids.”
“Sometimes you think because there’s construction that you don’t want to go down there – actually, get down to see the construction.”
Lane also encourages people to take photos while in the area and post them to social media with the hashtag #lovedowntown to be entered to win a $50 gift card from one of the shops in the construction area. The contest continues until July 12.
Paul Reynolds pool will reopen soon
St. John’s Coun. Jamie Korab said at the regular Monday council meeting the Paul Reynolds Community Centre pool will reopen “in the coming days,” as mechanical issues are now resolved.
The pool has been closed since May 9 due to a mechanical issue with the air-handling unit.
The rest of the community centre outside of the pool area has remained open during that time.
