Steffi D., a cast member of the popular musical “Come From Away” in Toronto, was in St. John’s Monday to present a cheque for $85,733.65 to the Community Food Sharing Association.

The money was raised at the January concerts of “Come From Away” at the Holy Heart Theatre and at last week’s performances of the musical in Toronto.

Cast member Steffi Didomenicantonio, who goes by the stage name Steffi D., plays the double role of two journalists in “Come From Away,” portraying Janis Goudie of Rogers Television and Brian Mosher of The Gander Beacon, both of whom covered the events in Gander during the week after 9-11.

Opera On the Avalon, in partnership with Mirvish Productions, showcased the concerts in St. John’s Jan. 23-27.

In addition to the Community Food Sharing Association, proceeds from the shows also went to benefit the towns of Gander, Gambo, Appleton, Lewisporte, Norris Arm and Glenwood, all of which played a vital role during 9-11 for the passengers and crews of the dozens of planes that were forced to land in Newfoundland due to the closure of U.S. air space due to the terrorist attacks on the United States.

Funds also went to the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
