CORNER BROOK, N.L. — A peaceful protest is being planned for Corner Brook Wednesday to call for changes in animal cruelty laws following the death of a cat in Port aux Basques in September.
It’s alleged that the cat, Mittens, was violently killed with a weapon.
The two people charged in connection with Mitten’s death — Jody Anderson and Peter Rossiter — are scheduled to make appearances in provincial court in Port aux Basques, at the same time as the rally.
According to Facebook posts, the event will begin between 1-1:30 p.m. at the Corner Brook civic centre parking lot.
The group plans to march past the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary detachment and down to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment and the court house.
Participants are asked to bring an orange ribbon or wear orange, bring a cat collar with bells, or any small bell. They’re also encouraged to bring their dogs on the walk to add a face to the cause.
Anderson’s appearance is set for 1 p.m. on two counts of unlawfully causing an animal unnecessary suffering, and single counts of injuring or endangering an animal and failure to comply with the condition of an undertaking.
The docket for the day also lists a Charter hearing on an application to exclude evidence from her case.
Anderson has other matters before the court. She is scheduled to go to trial Dec. 5 on charges of assault, mischief, operation of a conveyance while impaired, failure or refusal to comply with a demand, operating a motor vehicle without a licence and failure to stop at an accident scene.
Rossiter is to appear on a charge of assault on Wednesday.
The charges against Rossiter related to Mitten’s death will not be called until Dec. 4 and include injuring or endangering an animal and unlawfully causing an animal unnecessary suffering.
He’s also appearing on another assault charge that day.
