Even though she had a person willing to act as a surety, Judge Harold Porter said Friday that he felt pretrial detention for Samantha Piercey was necessary.

Piercey had been scheduled to appear in provincial court in Corner Brook on Tuesday to hear Porter’s decision on her bail hearing.

However, her matter was called early on Friday afternoon, with Porter rendering his decision via videoconference from the provincial court in Grand Bank.

Piercey, 28, is charged with assaulting a man on two separate occasions and with breaching an undertaking that required her to stay away from her alleged victim.

In denying her bail, Porter said she failed to establish that she would not commit another offence or attempt to interfere with justice if released.

The charges against her include two counts of assault with a weapon, assault, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats to damage or destroy property, mischief to property less than $5,000 and six breaches of an undertaking.

Her next court appearance will still take place Tuesday.
