Corner Brook city council has given its approval of an application to convert the former premises of The Western Star into a multi-level apartment complex.
The application was dealt with at last week’s public meeting of council.
The proposed development for the West Street property is considered a discretionary use for the area, which is located in the Downtown Commercial Zone.
According to documents filed with the city, the proposal calls for the addition of three stories, containing 21 apartments, above the existing structure. The ground level is to be converted to a 20-space parking garage.
The City of Corner Brook advertised the application for public comment in early July. Council approved the application after being told no objections to the proposed development had been received from the general public and that staff felt the proposed development would not have any negative impact on the surrounding area.
During the public meeting, staff indicated the interested proponent of the project is Trueman Developments. The New Brunswick-based company was also the developer of the West Valley Gardens apartment complex across the street from the former home of The Western Star.
A spokesperson for Trueman Developments declined an interview about the plans when contacted by the Western Star.
