Elderly couple die in early morning Stephenville residential fire

A house fire in Stephenville early this morning claimed the lives of an elderly couple.

An elderly couple died in a residential fire at this apartment building on St. George’s Avenue in Stephenville reported early this morning. An elderly woman in the other end of the duplex was helped out by neighbours.

The residential fire at an apartment house on St. George’s Avenue was reported to the Bay St. George RCMP at 3:23 a.m. with the Stephenville Fire Department, the Bay St. George RCMP and Emergency Medical Services attending the scene.

A woman, believed to be in her 90s, in the other end of the duplex apartment building was helped out by her neighbours and wasn’t injured as a result of the fire.

Neighbours said the couple are believed to be in their 80s.

Police said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature and their investigation is continuing.
