The list of places that remained open in the Corner Brook area Wednesday is probably much shorter than the one for everything that shut down because of the weather.

The prolonged blizzard conditions that began Boxing Day and stretched into Wednesday brought much of western Newfoundland to a halt.

With highway travel and around-town driving considered treacherous and ill advised, many businesses and government offices either did not bother to open or shut down early.

The YMCA of Western Newfoundland closed up shop and the Corner Brook public transit system took its buses off the roads.

Marine Atlantic’s operations, which were put on hold Tuesday, were not scheduled to resume sailings across the Cabot Strait until today because of the high winds.

The MV Apollo ferry also remained docked on the St. Barbe side of the Strait of Belle Isle and was aiming to get across to Labrador this morning, weather permitting.

Flying was less of a problem Wednesday as scheduled flights made it in and out of Deer Lake Regional Airport, despite some being late arriving.

The lodge at Marble Mountain also closed early. The ski resort is not planning to open until Jan. 1 at any rate.

Cross-country skiers willing to risk the elements could have availed of the Blow-Me-Down Trails and also warm up and get some food at the facility’s lodge, which remained open during Wednesday’s stormy weather.

The civic centre, including the Forever Young Fitness Centre, also stayed open in Corner Brook.
