A male crew member aboard a vessel parked in St. John’s Harbour suffered a serious injury as a result of the industrial incident Friday morning.
The man, in his 40s, received a deep laceration to the back of his neck, acting platoon chief Gina Burke of the St. John’s Regional Fire Department told The Telegram shortly after the incident, which happened at about 9:30 a.m. aboard the vessel Skandi Vinland.
She said his injury — which responders indicated was in the shape of a horseshoe — was reported as serious, but not life-threatening.
Several emergency crews, including firefighters, paramedics from Eastern Health and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) were on the scene at Harbour Drive, where the ship was moored behind Atlantic Place.
The injured man was seen being taken off the ship on a stretcher from a lower gangway and placed in an ambulance, which left the scene.
A second man, a coworker, was also taken to hospital and treated for shock as a precautionary measure, Burke said.
She said the men were servicing some onboard equipment one level below main deck when something went wrong. She also said investigators are working to determine what happened and if the piece of equipment malfunctioned.
As emergency personnel were arriving on the scene, crew members were disembarking from the neighbouring cruise ship Saga Sapphire, which was parked behind the Skandi Vinland, just behind Atlantic Place.
The RNC and accident investigators from Workplace Health and Safety will remain on scene to continue the investigation.
