The St. Fintan’s woman is still quite active and spends her time between her residence in her hometown and visiting her daughters, Emeria Power and Vera Bruce in Stephenville.
She has a number of ways she keeps her mind sharp, including reading, doing crosswords in different magazines and the Jumble scramble word game in The Western Star.
But it’s not all sitting around either, as she still does light housework and enjoys trips in the car, especially along routes she recognizes from spending time there in the past with her husband, the late Thomas Gillis.
One thing she likes about spending time in Stephenville is getting out and having meals from Mary Brown’s several times a month.
Originally Freda Cook from Cartyville in the Bay St. George South area, she married Gillis and the two spent many years together working with their contracting company cutting wood for Bowaters. It stemmed back to the early 1930s when she first went with her husband to the Deer Lake area.
She did all the secretary/bookkeeping work for his company, which eventually had up to 75 men on the payroll.
During their years together Freda and Tom had a family of five children, which, in addition to Bruce and Power, included sons Hugh, Douglas and Malcolm.
Gillis will be celebrating her birthday today at the Seniors Club in St. Fintan’s with friends and family.
