ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Greg Malone is throwing his hat back into the political ring.

The actor and comedian, known best for his roles on CBC shows CODCO and the Wonderful Grand Band, will run for the Avalon riding seat under the Green Party of Canada banner in this year’s federal election.

In a release announcing his candidacy, Malone stated that concern for the environmental welfare of the planet and its people was a motivating factor

“The Green Party gets it. They put it at the top of their agenda where it belongs. And government by corporation just isn't working. That’s why I want to support Elizabeth May and Greens around the globe. This is literally the battle of our lifetime."

Malone, from St. John’s, ran for the federal New Democrats in a 2000 by-election for the seat of St. John’s West, losing narrowly — by a margin of 356 votes — to Progressive Conservative candidate Loyola Hearn.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May stated that not only is she a fan of his work in entertainment, but she’s also impressed with his efforts in activism, including work to

to raise awareness of the health care issues facing persons living with HIV-AIDS to stop the privatization of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

“Greg will be a wonderful standard bearer for the Greens in Newfoundland, Labrador and Canada,” May stated.
