The Channel-Port aux Basques Volunteer Fire Department remains at the scene of a house fire on MacDonald Drive. The fire started after 9:30 am.

Jerome Battiste, one of witnesses, was at his home nearby and spotted the flames shooting up around 9:45 am. When he arrived at the burning house, he says he could hear the sound of the sirens on the way.

Witnesses said that the occupants escaped without injury, but a teenage neighbour was later treated for possible smoke inhalation by paramedics.

Fire fighters also rescued a dog owned by a neighbour.

Live wires fell across the road and were visibly sparking. Initially the fire department called NL Power to cut the power, which it did. The fire department also evacuated nearby homes along the short cul de sac as a precaution.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article stated that the PAB Fire Dept. had cut the power instead of NL Power. This was incorrect, and NL Power did respond to the emergency and cut the electricity. The Gulf News apologies for and regrets the error.
