A crosswalk adjacent to Holy Heart of Mary High School on Bonaventure Avenue will get some safety upgrades within a few months.
St. John’s Coun. Debbie Hanlon, lead for transportation, said the transportation department has suggested the crosswalk be raised so it is slightly higher than the rest of the road.
The move comes after two pedestrians were struck near the crosswalk – one in November and another in January.
After the first pedestrian was hit in November, the city installed camera equipment to study the crosswalk and determine what safety measures should be implemented.
Hanlon said a raised crosswalk is safer because it elevates pedestrians so they are more visible for motorists, and it also slows traffic because motorists tend to slow down for the raised area, much the same as for speed bumps.
The crosswalk is scheduled to be raised at the same time reconfiguration work is completed on Bonaventure Avenue sometime this spring or summer.
Hanlon said there will be a meeting within the next couple of weeks to discuss the change with stakeholders such as people in the neighbourhood and representatives from Holy Heart High School.
